Homework for Schulman Math

Page history last edited by Jay Schulman 1 day ago

Here are some key links related to homework:

Week of November 23-24

General Notes (1)  Yes, there was no HW on Monday night.  If you want to get ahead, finish the front of the "Doctor" sheet passed out in class on Monday.
  (2)  On Monday we did a self-assessment for the fall trimester, and then we learned about the Giant One, reviewed how to make equivalent fractions, and how to use the GCD to identify when a fraction is in simplest form.
  (3)  The Great 4 4 4 4 Challenge was issued last week, and it will remain an extra credit challenge until the end of next week, on Friday, December 4.   This is a really good stretch!  Almost all of the target numbers are possible, especially if you use factorials (ooooh, factorials -- do a little research if you miss it in class on Tuesday). The more targets you hit, the more extra credit you'll get.  Remember to pay attention to the order of operations, and show your steps.  Good luck!

Have a happy, safe, flavorful, and thankful Thanksgiving, everyone!

Week of November 16-20

General Notes (1)  Wednesday will have an abbreviated class time schedule because of the Talent Show assembly.
  (2)  There is a new Quiz on Friday.  It will cover finding factors, multiples, prime factorization, GCD (also known as GCF, Greatest Common Factor), and LCM (Monday's topic).
  (3)  "Factor Radio" and "F/M Radio" have been worked on in class last week and on Day 1, and they should be done and stay in your binder.  They are helpful in studying for the quiz.  If you haven't finished them, please make sure they get done as soon as possible.

HW #38:  (a)  p. 138 #1-3, 8-13, 20-21;   (b) Weekly Practice #4 due Friday

Notes: (1) For Part A you should fully read and understand Example A on page 136.  Your work on page 138 should be shown in exactly the same way.  You can use a calculator for the larger numbers, but try to do what you can on your own.

HW #39:  (a)  p. 138 #15-16 (use p. 137 Example 2 method);   (b) p. 140 #1-15 odd and 25-31 odd

Notes: (1) For Part A, it would really make sense to view (or re-view) the online video by Dr. Berger.  I like his method better than the one shown in the book.  They are essentially the same, but his makes more sense to most people.  (2) Part B of the HW  is a terrific review for the quiz.  If you know how to do this page "forwards and backwards, top to bottom, without hesitation" then you are likely in good shape for the quiz.

HW #40:  (a)  Factor Radio (targest 24, 36, 51, 56);   (b) F/M Radio (targest 8, 9, 12, 18;  (c) "Captain Hook" sheet.  All due no later than Monday

Notes: (1) I'm assigning this on Day Two because of the odd Talent Show assembly schedule on Wednesday.  I want to make sure that everyone can use their time most wisely.  (2) If you can complete all of this work before Friday, it will help you prepare for the quiz on Friday.  (3) Parts A and B have been available since last week, so there is no reason that they should not be done.  Many many students are already done with these parts.

Week of November 9-13

General Notes (1)  Don't forget, there's no school on Wednesday (Veteran's Day)
  (2)  While there is no official HW 38, there is a weekend assignment required.  See the note below.

HW #36:  p. 130-131 #41-46 (use step method), 59-61

Notes: (1) I was out sick today.  I'm feeling better but I'm not sure about being in school on Tuesday.  (2) Today's lesson focused on a second method of doing a prime factorization.  Read Example 3 and view the video tutorial to see how to do this if you were absent.  Remember, you can use the link at the top of this page and the keyword from the top of page 130.

HW #37:  p. 134 #1, 2, 4-6, 8-10, 21-35 odd.  (See Note 2 below.)

Notes: (1) I was out sick again today.  I should be in on Thursday.  (2) The online tutorials for (see top of page 134 for keyword and the top of this page for the link) for Examples 1 and 2 will be very useful.  On #4-6 you have to use the prime factor method (Example 2).  On 8-10 you have to use the factor list method (Example 1).  For the rest you get to choose which method to use, but you have to show your work no matter what.  You can't simply list answers because you know what they are.

As noted above, there is a weekend assignment, though it's not assigned an official HW number.  Please be sure to read it carefully and make sure that the appropriate signatures are gotten before school next week.  Thanks!

Week of November 2-6

General Notes (1)  Chapter 2 ReQuiz on Day 3.  Mandatory if 23 or less, optional if 24 or above.  Be sure to study for it as well as do the other homework.

HW #33:  (a) Read p. 104 thoroughly  (b) p. 106 #1, 2, 5, 6

Notes: (1) The warm-up covered the same material as the (b) part of the HW above.  Be sure to copy the table and fill in the answers as well as create the algebra equation to show what's going on.  (2) We also corrected the Graph the Rule! homework from last week, and I was checking in with students who are retaking the Chapter 2 quiz on Day 3 this week.

HW #34:  "Why Did the Horse..." Xerox

Notes: We started reviewing and learning about prime and composite numbers, factors, prime factorization, and using bases and exponents in prime factorization.  This material is covered in 3-1 of Chapter 3.  I don't have a copy of the Xerox to post online, sorry.

HW #35:  Practice Book Section 3-1, #1-12, 33, and at least 4 more from 13-32

Notes: #1-8 and #33 can be done right in the practice book.  The others are all prime factorizations that should be done on lined paper and formatted the way you did HW 34.  You are allowed to use a calculator for this assignment if you need to.  For the four optional problems, please try to choose problems that are good for your level: not too easy, and not too hard.  For those of you who like challenges, this is an especially good place to stretch yourself.  By the way, WEEKLY PRACTICE #3 is also due on Day 4.

NOTE: No weekend homework.  Sorry.  : )

Week of October 26-October 30

General Notes

(1)  Weekly Practice #2.  Here is a blank.  If you want, you can print out the blank and call someone for the problems.  It's due on Friday.

  (2)  Chapter 2 Quiz Returns.  They will be passed back D3.

HW #29:  (a) Practice Book Lesson 2-6,  (b) 9 vocabulary words on the left side of p. 100 in text

Notes: (1) Today's lesson was an introduction of coordinate graphing.  If you were absent, be sure to read pages 100-101 before doing the Practice Book.  (2) For the vocabulary just continue on the vocabulary sheet(s) you already have.  If you filled up the green one, continue on lined paper.

HW #30:  (a) Lesson 2-6 Puzzles "Face It" sheet,  (b) Lesson 2-6 Problem Solving sheet

Lesson 2-6 "Face It" sheet, Lesson 2-6 Problem Solving sheet
Notes: Today we graded Integer Posters and extended our practice of coordinate graphing.

HW #31:  (a) Graph the Rule! sheet,  (b) Parent sign Chapter 2 Quiz letter

Notes: I  don't have a digital copy of the (a) part of the HW.  The quiz letter is here, but you really need the quiz for the letter to make sense.

HW #32  Work on the practice sheets for the requiz

Week of October 19-October 23

General Notes

(1)  Weekly Practice #1.  This is the first sheet of review problems for this year.  They will be turned in on Friday every week unless you are told otherwise.  All work is to be done by hand without a calculator.  I don't have a digital copy of this, but I do have a blank.  If you want, you can print out the blank and call someone for the problems.  Or, you can call someone for the problems and simply do them on lined paper.

  (2)  Integer Operations Poster.  Don't forget, this is due on Day 1 of next week.
  (3)  Chapter 2 Quiz.  There is a small quiz this Friday on integer operations (the poster topics) and solving simple equations with negative integers.

HW #26:  p. 96 #1-7, 20, 9-19 odd

Notes: (1) Yes, please do the problems in this order.  It's assigned this way so that you can have a chance to work with classmates before going home.  (2) Be sure to have a look at pages 94-95 for examples on all these problems.  Also, don't forget that you can find the tutorials online by following the instructions at the top of page 96.

HW #27:  p. 96-97 #24, 30, 39-41

Notes: We corrected work in class, did some in-class work on a new Xerox (not available to post online), and then had a menu of working on HW, the poster, or the Weekly Practice.  Please note that there is now a short quiz on integer operations on Friday.

HW #28:  p. 98 #1-25 odds

Notes: This homework is on a page called Ready to Go On?  It is a great review for the quiz because it has problems from all of the sections 2-1 through 2-5.  The answers aren't in the back of the book.  After doing the problems, you should check them to make sure you are really ready for the quiz.  You can find the answers here.

Week of October 12-October 15 (no school Friday)

General Notes

(1)  While you sleep in on Friday (or do whatever you are doing) we teachers will be slaving away at school.

  (2)  Integer Operations Poster.  This week students receive a poster assignment on how to do the four operations with positive and negative integers.  You can see what it looks like here.  This project will be done both in class and at home.  It is due on Monday, October 26.

HW #24:  (a) Subtraction Sheet lines 9-15;  (b) Practice book Lesson 2-4, #1-8, 17-24, 33-34;  (c) Challenge sheet 2-4

Notes: (1) Part A is a continution of the sheet we worked on last week.  (2) The Practice Book is the hole-punched book that was passed out last Friday.  (3) On Part 3 you should do your best, but I don't want you spending 87 hours on it tonight (as if that was possible...).

HW #25:  Work on poster project and bring in what your work for Day 3

Notes: Day 3 in class will be spent on the poster, so it's really important that you both work on it at home AND bring in your work (writing, images, etc. for the poster).  It should be easy for me to see what you accomplished at home for this.

There is no "OFFICIAL" homework over the weekend that will be checked on Monday, but the posters will be due in a week and a half and this is a long term project that you have to manage.  It would be a GREAT idea to work on it over the weekend.

Week of October 5-October 9

General Notes

(1)  The Chapter 1 test will be returned on Day 4.

HW #20:  (a) pp. 78-79, #45-55;  (b) p. 84 #13-16 (use + and - tiles to show subtraction)

Notes: Using the + and - tiles for subtraction is kind of tricky.  It might help you to follow these steps:  (1) Draw the first number using the fewest number of tiles possible, (2) Ask yourself, "Do I  have enough in the picture of the second number to subtract (take away)?",  (3) If not, add zero pairs until you have enough to take subtract (take away), and (4) Take away the second number, then count what's left for your answer.

HW #21:  (a) p. 84 #29-34 using + and - tiles;  (b) p. 85 #50-54

Notes: This is more practice with drawing a respresentation of subtraction with +  and - tiles.  For Part (b) be sure to provide sentence answers when necessary.

HW #22:  (a) Subtracting Integers Made Easy photocopy LINES 1-8;  (b) p. 90 #5-8, 22-25

Notes: For Part (a) be sure to do the whole line, not just the problem next to the number.  That's 24 problems on this page.  I do not have a file of it here for downloading, sorry.  For Part (b), your best best is to view the the video tutorials for Example A and Example B from section 2-4, as well as review the material about multiplying integers on pages 88-89.  FYI, most students are finishing this HW assignment in class!  Hurrah!

HW #23:  (a) Make corrections to the Chapter 1 Test  (b) Have parents sign the test

Notes: An answer key was passed out for the test.  Make full corrections in red pen either on the test or on lined paper.  Even for correct answers note from the answer key how it could have been better and make your answers "more right."  P.S. Don't forget to organize the TOC (without the test) and get signed for turning in on Monday.  Have a great weekend!

Week of September 28-October 2

General Notes

(1)  Group Quiz will be returned on D2 this week.

  (2)  Chapter 1 Test on Friday.  This will cover the same material and be in a similar format to what you saw on Quiz #1 and the Group Quiz.

HW #17:  pp. 72-73, #2-30 even, 39-49.  Use graph paper.  DUE DAY 3.

  2-1 Video Ex. 1, 2-1 Video Ex. 2, 2-1 Video Ex. 3, 2-1 Video Ex. 4
Notes: (1) We started Chapter 2.  (2) On the HW be sure to use graph paper, make number lines for the even problems, make your number intervals on the numbers lines match the vertical lines of the graph paper, and do neat work.

HW #18:  (a) Signed Group Quiz;  (b) Study minimum of 15 minutes for the Chapter Test AND get parent signature (in margins of TOC) as proof.

Notes: The warm-up introduced + and - signs as models of integers.  For example, +++ could represent the number 3, and -- represents the number -2.  +-+-++++ would represent positive 4 because the first three + and - signs cancel each other out in "zero pairs, leaving four positive signs.  The rest of the period was spent doing independent work and studying for the test.

HW #19:  (a) Study for the Chapter 1 test (tomorrow);  (b) p. 78 #1-12.  For #5-12, use the + and - symbols

Notes: For #1-4, look at how Example 1 was done in the book on page 76.  Yes, you need to draw number lines for each.  To get more info about #5-12, see the notes for HW 18 above or review your warmup from the other day.

Week of September 21-25

General Notes

(1)  Quiz #1 returned on D1 this week.

  (2)  Group Quiz on 1-3, 1-5, 1-6, and 1-8 through 1-11.  For more on what a Group Quiz is, please see Sine-Post #3.

HW #14:  (a) p. 42, #1-17 odd, and p. 45 #1-15 odd;  (b) Parent/Guardian sign the returned quiz

  1-8 Video Example 1, 1-8 Video Example 2, 1-9 Video Example 1
Notes: (1) Today we introduced the "classic" way to solve equations that involve a single variable and addition, and a single variable and subtraction.  (2) We also passed back the first quiz and looked at the most common errors made.  This needs a parent/guardian signature and is worth HW points.  For more on this, see the new 9/21 Sine-Post #3.

HW #15:  (a) p. 49, #1-17 odd, and p. 52-53 #1-17 odd;  (b) New Vocabulary: Equation, Solution, Inverse Operation

  1-10 Video Example 1, 1-10 Video Example 2, 1-11 Video Example 1, 1-11 Video Example 2, Glossary
Notes: Today we introduced how to solve equations that have multiplication and division in them, we corrected homework, and then we had the bulk of the time for independent work and check-ins on the recent quiz.

HW #16: Study a minimum of 15 minutes for the Group Quiz AND get a parent signature to prove.

Notes: (1)  The parent signature is to prove that you studied for at least 15 minutes.  The signature can be in the margin of the TOC next to HW 16.  (2) Where and how can you study?  Look at the sections of the book that are being covered, re-do problems you did, do problems that that you didn't, check answers in the back for the odds, try the Ready to Go On? on page 54, check out the Study Guide Review on pages 58-60, try the Chapter Test on page 61, do problems from Extra Practice in the back, have parents help and quiz you, go to the Holt resources online . . . Get the idea?  There's a lot that you can do!  :)
