Week of February 8-12, 2010
| General Notes |
(1) The Initials Project is due this Friday. All work must be done before you come into class except for mounting all your great work on construction paper.
|
| |
(2) Last week's Fractions Test will be returned on Day 2 this week. It will need to be corrected, signed by a parent, and returned to class. The Decimals Test will follow shortly.
|
HW #66: Initials Project Area Calculations (make sure you bring in all materials on D2; you can go further if you want with inking the perimeter and measurements)
HW #67: (a) p. 234 #1-9, 21 (b) Fractions Test corrected in red pen and signed
| |
Notes: Be sure to carefully read pages 232-233 if you were absent or if you are confused by some of the problems on the homework.
|
Week of February 1-5, 2010
| General Notes |
(1) I'm giving retakes on the multiplying and dividing with fractions quiz if you got less than 14 out of 18 points on the first one. This is happening on Monday and Tuesday during lunch or right after school.
|
| |
(2) If you retook a quiz last week they will be returned to you on Day 1 this week.
|
| |
(3) There are two, count them, two tests at the end of this week, to help us wrap up Chapter 4. Rather than taking one big test, each test will be worth 50 points. The test on Day 3 will cover adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing with fractions and mixed numbers, the same topics on the recent quizzes. The test on Day 4 will be on the same operations, but with decimals. |
| |
(4) HW 62 is a terrific preparation for the test on Day 4, and as I mentioned on Friday in class, you are welcome to start it over the weekend. Treat it like a practice test and then check your answers in the back of the book or with a calculator. Using the other parts of Chapter 4 (study sections, practice problems, Ready to Go On?, Study Guide Review, Chapter Test, etc.) are great places to review and sharpen your skills. |
| |
(5) We've also started the Initials Project, due on Friday, February 12. |
HW #62: p. 224 #46-63
HW #63: Study for the D3 Fractions Test (see above)
| |
Notes: We also got the assignment for the Initials Project. This is due on Friday, February 12. We'll have lots of time in class on it before then. |
HW #64: Study for the D4 Decimals Test (see above)
| |
Notes: If you want to keep working on the Initials Project, you can. But being prepared for the test comes first, OK? |
HW #65: Initials Project Perimeter Calculations (make sure you bring in all materials on D1; you can go further if you want)
Week of January 26-29, 2010
| General Notes |
(1) I'm giving retakes on the adding and subtracting with fractions quiz if you got less than 14 out of 18 points on the first one. I'm arranging times with you for either lunch or after school on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. There will be a similar opportunity for the multiply and divide with fractions quiz for Monday or Tuesday of next week.
|
| |
(2) We have a short week because of the Monday staff development day. Most classes will meet just three times.
|
HW #59: (a) p. 208 #1-5 (b) "Multiply and Divide by 10..." sheet (c) Mult/Div quiz corrected and signed
| |
Notes: (1) Today we talked about dividing with decimal divisors and learned why the rule you may have learned in fifth grade (about moving decimals over) works: It's your friend and mine, the Giant One. (2) The sheet can only be found in class or from a friend who gets it for you.
|
HW #60: p. 208 #14-27 OR p. 208-209 #34-45
| |
Notes: Students are self-selecting which of these two assignments to do. The first one is "nuts and bolts" long division with decimal divisors. The second is the same, but with problem solving thrown in if you are already proficient at the long division. Make a good choice. This all is due no later than Day 1 next week.
|
HW #61: (a) Finish HW 60 (one or the other; both if you want...) (b) Begin studying for next week's tests (see notes at the beginning of next week's section)
| |
Notes: Today we created a Giant Inch and began practicing using a ruler to measure in inches on a handout. This is preparation for the beginning of a new project on Monday, the Initials Project.
|
Week of January 19-22, 2010
| General Notes |
(1) This week we will have a quiz on multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers on Friday. Study throughout the week. It will be small -- probably around six problems worth three points each.
|
| |
(2) We have a short week because of the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday on Monday. Most classes will meet just three times.
|
HW #57: (a) EITHER p. 194 #28-35, 42-45 OR Challenge sheet 4-5 (b) Add/Subtract Fractions quiz signed
| |
Notes: (1) The (a) part of the homework is great practice for the quiz on Friday. It's all about dividing with fractions. (2) We corrected the Weekly Practice #6 and HW 55 in class.
|
HW #58: (a) Study for the Quiz (b) p. 204 #1-27 odd
Week of January 11-15, 2010
| General Notes |
(1) This week we will have a quiz on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers on Day 4. Study throughout the week. It will be small -- probably around six problems worth three points each.
|
| |
(2) This week we focus on multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers. There will be a quiz on this at the end of next week.
|
HW #53: p. 190 #13-23 odd, 40-52 even
| |
Notes: (1) I was out in meetings on Monday. (2) In class we took notes about multiplying with fractions and mixed numbers. We then corrected Weekly Practice 5, turned in the TOC from last week (without attaching notes), and worked on HW.
|
HW #54: (a) "What did the Dentist..." sheet, (b) p. 184 #23-27
| |
Notes: (1) The sheet is not available online. Sorry. (2) We took notes on the back of yesterday's note sheet about how to cross cancel/simplify BEFORE multiplying fractions. You must practice the cross canceling on the sheet HW. (3) The text problems are great practice for Friday's quiz.
|
HW #55: (a) Front and back of "Reciprocal and Divide by a Fraction...", (b) Study for the D4 Quiz
| |
Notes: (1) Again, the sheet is not available online. Sorry. (2) We took new notes today on dividing with fractions. Please get a copy from a classmate and keep in your binder. We also talked about reciprocals. Check out the Glossary at the top of this page to find out what that is. (3) I also passed out missing work notices today.
|
HW #56: (a) Weekly Practice #6 (b) Don't forget to get your TOC ready and signed over the weekend
Week of January 4-8, 2010
| General Notes |
(1) Welcome back, everyone! I hope that you had an excellent, excellent two weeks off.
|
| |
(2) The Chapter 3 tests are all graded and ready to return. You will get them back on Day 3. |
HW #49: EITHER p. 178-179 #42-55, 58 OR p. 178 #18-27 (see notes below)
| |
Notes: Depending on how people did on a pre-check of concepts before the winter break, students do either the first option or the second. If you were absent and want to know which one to do, do the first one if you think you can and check your work on the odd answers in the back of the book. The great majority of students did the first option. If you are iffy on that first option, then do the second option. See the text and/or online videos to help if you are stuck.
|
HW #50: EITHER p. 182-183 #27-43 odd, 44 OR p. 182-183 #27-41 odd OR p. 182 #14-21
| |
Notes: (1) There is a handout titled Subtracting With Mixed Numbers that we used for taking notes today. You will need to either walk through it with a friend of come see me during office hours to complete the notes for it. (2) I assigned each individual in class one of the three assignments listed above. At the very least, do the third option. If you can do some of the others, too, all the better. Thanks.
|
HW #51: (A) "Where Do the Trees..." sheet #1-6 (B) p. 178-179 #43-47
| |
Notes: (1) I don't have a digital copy of the handout. You can, however, call someone for the six problems. (2) Please do both Parts A and B on the same lined piece of paper. (3) If you already did #43 and #44 last night, just write down "Did already" on your HW.
|
HW #52: (A) "Where Do the Trees..." sheet completed (B) Weekly Practice #5 (C) Ch. 3 test corrected in red and signed.
| |
Notes: (1) I was out of the classroom today in meetings. (2) When you do the "Trees" sheet be sure to do the problems and complete the bottom, too. (3) When subtracting with mixed numbers, try to do some using improper fractions and some using borrowing and regrouping. You should be able to do both.
|
Week of December 14-18
| General Notes |
(1) The Chapter 3 test is on Day 2. See the test study guide if you lost yours.
|
| |
(2) The Trimester Review Folder was due on Day 1 thi.
|
| |
(3) We'll be collecting TOC 44-47 on Day 3
|
| |
(4) As usual before long holiday breaks, we'll collect this week's TOC and work on Day 4 so that you don't have to worry about any math over the break and can relax! |
There is no HW on the first night this week other than to study for the chapter test.
: )
HW #48: p. 172 #3-25 odd
| |
See p. 170-171 about this work for extra help. Be sure to read everything on the pages, including the margins.
|
Week of December 7-11
| General Notes |
(1) There will be a Chapter 3 test on Day 2 next week. See the test study guide to help you prepare.
|
| |
(2) The Trimester Review Folder and your binder must be reviewed with a parent or guardian, and you need to develop goals for the winter term, this week. All the information you need should be in the Fall 2009 folder that went home last Friday, and it's also summarized here. The whole package is due back no later than next Monday, December 14.
|
HW #44: a) Practice Book #2-24 even, 25-26 (do on own paper) OR p. 148-149 #17, 21, 29, 31, 45-52, 54 (b) Study plan for test
| |
Notes: (1) Part A of the HW is meant to provide practice with the concepts we worked with on HW 43 over the weekend. If you did well on the HW and/or would like a little more challenge, do the work out of the textbook rather than from the practice book. Either way, do the work on lined or graph paper and show your work, especially for the long division. (2) Since the test is coming up, make an informal plan of how you are going to prepare over the next week. (3) In class we also filled out a summary chart of the fractions, decimals, and percents for all the eighths.
|
HW #45: p. 152 #1-7, 11-24
| |
Notes: See Examples 1 and 2 on pages 150-151 if you need help on tonight's work. Also, be sure to continue working studying for the test next week.
|
HW #46: p. 152-153, #8-10, 25-30, 39-42, 44-46
| |
Notes: Though we are looking at the graphing of the comparisons in class, DO NOT graph the numbers as shown in the example on page 151 and as asked for in the instructions. We'll talk more about that on Day 4. Thanks. By the way, don't forget to keep studying for next week's test.
|
HW #47: (a) pp. 158-160, #3, 7, 11, 15, . . . , 79, 83 (see notes below) (b) Study for the test
| |
Notes: If you look closely you'll notice a pattern on the problem numbers. You do every fourth problem starting with #3. The three dots mean you continue that pattern and then end with problem 83. That's 21 problems in total, and we had most of class to work on them. Everyone also got a test study guide.
|
Week of November 30-December 4
| General Notes |
(1) The Chapter 3 Quizzes were handed back on Day 1.
|
| |
(2) Because of canoe trips and other oddities of the schedule this week I will only see each class three times by the end of Friday. Here's when I see each class this week: Diamond (Tu, We, Fr), Ruby (Mo, Th, Fr), Topaz (Mo, Tu, Fr), Sapphire (Mo, We, Th), Amethyst (We, Th, Fr)
|
| |
(3) The 4 4 4 4 Challenge can be turned in anytime this week for extra credit. To earn points you need to fill in a mimimum of 16 boxes and show your work correctly. The more you fill, the more points you get. You can earn up to 8 points by filling in either 39 or 40 boxes.
|
HW #41: (a) "Doctor" and "Brick and Carpenter" sheets (front to back) (b) Chapter 3 Quiz corrected in red pen (c) Parent/guardian sign the quiz
| |
Notes: We reviewed how to make equivalent fractions and had a mini lessons on converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and mixed numbers to improper fractions. Viewing Dr. Burger (Example 4 from Section 3-4) can help with this if you were absent and need a refresher.
|
HW #42: (a) p. 144 #1-19 odd, 25, 28, 38, 40 (b) FDP Eighths sheet
| |
Notes: The new concept for today was diving into knowing the fraction, decimal, and percent equivalents for all the eighths up through one whole. Knowing these backwards and forwards will be very useful as we move forward from here. Unless someone walks you through how to fill out the sheet, you might want to wait on this until you get back to school to consult with me. A friend on the phone could probably help you do it, though.
|
HW #43: (a) p. 148 #1-11 odd, 15, 20-32 even (b) Make parent appointment for trimester review ____________________________ (c) Tidy your binder
| |
Notes: (1) The text work will require that you read and understand Examples 1, 2, and 3 on the previous pages. We took notes and did examples on those items in class. Part of that work included a long division review. If you need help on that, be sure to ask someone. (2) Folders are going home this weekend that summarize the work you did last term. You need to make an appointment with a parent or guardian, review the work, set goals, and bring the folder back, signed, by Monday, December 14. Instructions are in the folder, so read the letter and pink sheet carefully. The blank line on the HW is your reminder to set a date to meet and write it down on your TOC.
|
Week of November 23-24
| General Notes |
(1) Yes, there was no HW on Monday night. If you want to get ahead, finish the front of the "Doctor" sheet passed out in class on Monday.
|
| |
(2) On Monday we did a self-assessment for the fall trimester, and then we learned about the Giant One, reviewed how to make equivalent fractions, and how to use the GCD to identify when a fraction is in simplest form. |
| |
(3) The Great 4 4 4 4 Challenge was issued last week, and it will remain an extra credit challenge until the end of next week, on Friday, December 4. This is a really good stretch! Almost all of the target numbers are possible, especially if you use factorials (ooooh, factorials -- do a little research if you miss it in class on Tuesday). The more targets you hit, the more extra credit you'll get. Remember to pay attention to the order of operations, and show your steps. Good luck!
|
Have a happy, safe, flavorful, and thankful Thanksgiving, everyone!
